The challenges, and your fervent responses to each challenge, are the exact proof of that.

I’m excited at what 2013 is going to bring, but first, let’s focus on reflecting on how 2012 has been for us. This is what the 2013 Countdown Challenge is for. Onward and forward with the challenge guys!

  21. Shannon L. Buck 13 years ago

    1. I was able to visit my daughter Skye twice this year, versus the one time I usually get to travel up north.
    2. I was able to spend extra time with my daughter Zowie, who is planning a move to London next year.
    3. I am renting a room in a house near where Zowie lives and attends school, and have found that I enjoy this area.
    4. I have leaned that how many things I have is not as important as what I have. I have given away so much, and don’t even miss the things I no longer have.
    5. I have had the opportunity to assess the items that I have stored since my move to this room. There are a few more things I will not be bringing here, but I am planning the arrangement of the room that I am renting so that I can include the items that I find necessary in my life. This winter will be spent readying this room for the addition of these items.
    6. I enjoy working back at the inn. I used to work there when my daughters were little.
    7. I love that I trained for two more positions at the inn, one in laundry and one as a front desk agent. I no longer have to clean rooms every time I go to work :)
    8. I also love that I got two raises at work this year, one for housekeeping and the other for front desk.
    9. I like that people had enough confidence in me, believing that I could perform the front desk job, which gave me the push to try it. I did not ask for the position, the general manager approached me.
    10. I enjoyed spending more time outside, photographing nature.
    11. I love that I managed to write 50,000 + words in my second manuscript during the month of November.
    12. I like that I feel good about myself as a person. This has not always been the case. It is funny how I feel better now that I have given up so many things, than I did before.

  22. 1. I Started grad school.
    2. I got all A’s my first semester.

    7. My children impress me more and more every year.
    8. My family and I are on a 12 state road trip for Christmas.
    9. I got a 4.0 in last spring’s refresher classes.
    10. I got a 4.0 in my first semester of Grad School.
    11. I read 20 books.
    12. The world didn’t end.

I had a hard time coming up with these… that’s sad. One resolution is to pay more attention.

  23. Thinking of twelve things I love about the year 2012, I realized I really had to work to come up with the second half of my list. But I appreciate that, because it really had me think about the year as a whole. I love that this list is essentially a list of things I’m grateful for this year, as I think it’s always a great idea to count your blessings. =)

Here’s my list then, in no particular order:

    1) I got to meet my best friend in person for the first time! I was really nervous about it, and honestly it was pretty awkward initially. But it didn’t take too long for us to get comfortable with each other, and our friendship has been stronger ever since because of it.

    2) I met a ton of new friends this year, who I feel very close to. By chance, a guy approached my sister in one of her classes and through her connection with him, I got to meet an awesome group of people (who were actually closer to my age than hers, not that it matters too much) who I begun to hang out with regularly. It’s been great, it’s been my best semester yet in terms of meeting and getting close to new people. I’m so thankful for everything they’ve taught me so far, and can only hope we keep in contact through the years!

    3) I made Dean’s List for both of my semesters at college this year. Well technically, the fall semester hasn’t been announced yet, but my grades are good enough for it!

    4) I began to figure out who I really am this year. Still an ongoing process as there’s a lot to learn about myself after focusing on others for so long, but I’ve made good progress and see no signs of stopping.

    5) I started trying new things outside of my comfort zone. Whether meeting or going out with people, or trying new experiences entirely (like going to a Hookah bar), I’ve definitely attempted a lot more this year than I have before, and I think I’m better for it.

    6) I finally figured out what I’m doing with my undergraduate degree (Majoring in English and minoring in Web Technology). For a while I was considering changing my major, but I wasn’t sure to what. I ended up just adding a minor instead. I’m still not entirely sure what I’m aiming for career-wise, but at least I’m learning things I love.

    7) I got an awesome haircut that I really love. Sorta a silly one, but I got a very visibly asymmetric look (short on the right side and long on the left) and I absolutely love it! I’m pretty shy and usually avoid things which draw attention to myself, but I decided to go for it in a step of being a little braver.

    8) I got glasses, so my eyes are no longer straining like they used to. I avoided this hoping somehow my eyes would fix themselves, but I finally realized risking the health of my eyes was just not worth it. I hope to get contacts soon to get even sharper vision.

    9) I picked up a lot of hobbies again that I stopped pursuing when I hit a rough patch in my life, such as writing and drawing. I had many things going against me when I stopped writing and drawing, and I never quite had the energy to pick it up again. It’s near the end of the year, but I’ve actually begun sketching and writing again. Nothing’s really come of it so far, but I’m happy to at least have the will to try.

    10) I got a solid grasp on the basics of HTML and CSS thanks to my classes, allowing me to take my amateurish knowledge a step higher to a more practical level. I can set up basic websites from memory now, which gives me a solid foundation for learning more advanced web-coding techniques.

    11) I read two of my poems at a reading for my school’s literary magazine, Daedalus, and had both published in this year’s edition as well. I’m also an editor for the magazine, which means I get to practice my editing skills while reading student-submitted poems and short stories.

    12) I’ve learned some amazing things and have gotten some amazing advice this year, much of which is finally starting to sink in for me. One of my new friends I’ve met this year is especially to thank for this. I’ve learned that as long as I do my best, I can’t really worry about anything else. Our lives are too short to live worrying about every little thing, and it’s all we can do to try to make a difference while we’re here. Our purpose is to do something, to contribute to this world and the people in it. We all mess up sometimes, but what counts is not giving up and giving life all we’ve got.

As a bonus, we survived the end of the world as it’s officially 12/21/12. Woohoo!
