Hi guys!

I think I slacked a lot in my other journal. I thought I could start fresh this year. I'll try to make it a point to post here weekly, perhaps somewhere during Sat/Sun?

Main Goals

One of my main goals this year is to take my studying more seriously. My studies slacked in 2011 and I don't want that to happen again.

How am I supposed to achieve that? I think this year's teachers will definitely help me to achieve this goal! I'm lucky to get very inspiring teachers that don't only focus on getting good grades.

One thing that I like about every teacher:
  • EL/Form Teacher: Very ambitious! :)
  • Math: Very organised. She really stresses on the importance of organising our Math file well
  • CL: Don't ever procrastinate. On the first day of class we alreaedy started lessons. (Other teachers droned on about the scheme of works and expectations ;))
  • SC: Very concerned. During our periods today, she went around helping us and making sure we were doing the experiment right.
  • SS: Not study-focused. In the first two periods of his lessons he talked about the recent MRT breakdowns in SG
  • Art: Generous. She's the form teacher of another class, yet she gave us construction paper to decorate our class for a competition. :D
  • IRS (it's a project): Encouraging. She was my last year SS teacher and the whole class loved her! :D

I love these teachers! :D

Secondly... I want GLB to get readers and be an active community for people wanting to seek advice on living the life they want.

I won't go deep into this. I don't really feel like promoting that in this forums. :)

Habits I want to Cultivate
I've downloaded a habit-tracking app: Habit Streak onto my Android. I have a couple of habits I want to cultivate this year:
  1. Email: Only check email when I have free time. On the computer, only check it twice: when I turn on the computer when I start to turn it off
  2. Computer: Concentrate efforts on the computer to study. Only use 1h of non-school related (i.e. GLB) computer daily (on weekdays). On weekends, I'm free to use anytime I want, except I try to keep it minimal.
  3. Computer: Only use it after I complete my homework
  4. Sleep: Turn off the bedlight before 10pm Sun-Thu, and 11pm Fri-Sat
  5. Facebook: only check notifications and nothing else (unless I planned it)
  6. TV: DON'T watch tv AT ALL. I used to be sucked in to TV. I watched the first episode of a drama on Channel 8 (9PM) and got curious, therefore I watched until the end. Cycle repeats. ;)

I guess that's about all. Reply if you have a question and I hope I get some replies? :)

Hey, Amanda. it's great that you are focused on doing well in school and finding things you like about your teachers. I'm sure doing well in school will help you with your blog. This new found motivation should give you new insights into organization and productivity that would make great blog posts.

Good idea cutting out TV. When I was your age I'm sure I watched TV for hours each day. I don't think I cut it out of my life until I was about 22.

Long Story Short, The Kicking of the TV Habit

Last time, every weekday I'll be stuck at home watching a 9PM show. I would forget the details of the episode in a while, except the storyline was intriguing and made me tune in to the next episode...and the cycle goes on. Every day, I would sit on the couch watching. The shows and conmercials gave me no value. For the commercials (i.e. the stuff that fills 20 minutes of the 60 minutes show-time) I would just walk around. I would never go and do something else somewhere else (e.g. go to my desk to pack my bag for the next day) for fear of missing a single minute of the show.

So every day, 20 minutes is so clearly wasted by walking around. Looking closely, however, I realised that I was wasting MORE THAN ONE HOUR every weekday!

What I meant was, I realised that I would stop something I was doing before to wait for the show to start (around 5 min here). Then, the show itself (1h) gave me no value add. Next, I would always watch the trailer. I had to wait after a couple of advertisements for the trailer to start to air. This would take around 3 minutes.

So, everyday, an hour is wasted. Every week, 5 WHOLE HOURS is wasted! Imagine what I could do with the time.

Before I officially started the habit, I gave myself a few days' grace to not wath TV. (To let me test the waters)
  • On the first day grace, I re-defined my mission purpose. (That's my handwriting when my eye's closed. I find I go deeper in and give more...well...deeper answers. :))
  • On the second day, I came up with the list of habits I want to cultivate through 2012.
  • On the third day, the last day of the 'testing the waters' part, I came up with main goals I want to achieve as well as the steps needed to take them.

Something I Did

Today morning, I downloaded an app from the Android market and wrote down my mission purpose. I edited the words a bit so that I could act on them immediately.

I put the widget on my front page (one of the only 2 pages I have on my phone) so that whenever I turned on my phone I could see the note, and thus get inspired and motivated, as well as reminded.

You can view a screen shot of it. Oh, and if you're wondering, the widget below is one of Any.DO's ones. I use the to-do list a lot!

Hi Matt!

I don't really try to find bad things about my teachers, simply because I won't have the guts to say it and the teachers won't even change (so what for?) E.g. if a teacher is boring I don't say to her that she's boring so she can't change.

Anyway I agree with the blog post ideas. Organisation, productivity, time management, perseverance, etc. all counts, especially if the curriculum is very tough... I have another 'dream' I wanna talk about next week, going more detailed to this next week. Something about blogging. :)

Regarding TV, read the above post. It goes more into detail. ;) Even then, I only watched an hour a day, but it still sucks up valuable time.

Okay, I'm going to reduce the frequency in which I post updates to 2 weeks. It's frustrating trying to find time to write an update where I could be instead doing stuff I love. (I have to be home while I'm doing this since I've no 3G or anything; I usually update and track my progress in my Evernote notebook without Internet connection!)

Okay, just an update on my goals for now: I've marked both my computer habits as completed (use 1h of non-school related computer, and after I copmlete my homework) since it's been smooth sailing I don't need any reminders.

Facebook (notifications ONLY), email (twice a day), and TV (not at all) is still at a 16-day streak, which means I've accomplished those every single day.

Sleeping, it's on a longest streak so far - 10 days. I don't remember when I didn't manage the 10/11pm 'deadline'. All I know is that it's happened twice, which means this is the poorest performing habit so far.

The TV Habit: How's it Going?

I'm going to do this until I complete the habit, because it's arguably the most important/huge habit I'm trying to build now! (I used to watch around 2h last time, on some days even 3 - 5.30 to 6.30, the 9PM show and finally The X Factor!)

Okay, so how's it going? GREAT. I'm subscribed to the X Factor newsletter, which I'm sure will send an email when the second season will start. I'll probably NOT watch the show on TV, probably on the computer during SCHOOL HOLIDAYS, where I've a lot of time~ (no advertisements on TV, and I can choose if I want to watch or skip)

I don't feel any urge to watch TV - I don't know what the show is about, it may well be another series (but I doubt so. usually lengths are about 30 episodes). Whenever my father watches TV I just go to my room and either use my phone to update (as I've said) or do my homework/assessment, etc.

It's great to stop watching TV now! :D

Hey Amanda, congratulations on the launch of your blog! It looks terrific, and you seem to have a lot of content up already! I also love the mission statement which you have redefined, which sounds very powerful.

By the way, I went to check out some articles on your blog in enthusiasm, and chanced upon your ESPER series and purpose series, which seems to be based on the same ESPER and Purpose series on PE? I actually welcome other sites to reference my content, but I do require that credit given to the source and link back provided to the original articles, so it would be great if you could do that! At the moment it looked like you took the structure and lessons from the articles and rewrote them into your own words - You may want to be careful with that, because that pretty much falls under plagiarism. Some authors/writers take that very seriously. I haven't looked at any of your other articles, just these 2 series, so let me know if there were other articles written in the same fashion. (By the way, in your ESPER series you mentioned that you developed the ESPER framework, which I'm not sure why?)

If you could let me know what's the status of the situation, that would be great! Thanks Amanda. :)

Hi Celes, terribly sorry about that :(. I guess I went a little overboard with that - taking credit for others' work. I've edited the ESPER posts already, but not the purpose one yet. I'll be working on that later. And nope, I only did that for ESPER and the purpose series.

I hope you don't mind and I can promise you it won't happen again in the future. :)

P.S. If there's any problem with the updated posts please feel free to email me (you know my email right? in the forums database?) and I'll edit them again.

Hey Amanda, no worries at all! I know you didn't mean it. :D I've not checked the updated posts yet but I'm sure they should be fine now. Just wanted to point it out as writers can get quite iffy about such things, and it's also not good to take credit for others' material, since it creates doubt about one's work (which will not help in the development of your work). Your blog will only grow bigger in time, and staying true to the code of conduct will be instrumental in your blog's rapid growth!

As I've already mentioned to you a couple of times, I think it's great you're doing what you're doing at your age. I look forward to following your journey through PE.

Okay, time for another update! It hasn't been two weeks yet but this week has been a hell (sorry for using that word!) of a week for me.

On the first day of CNY (Monday), I fell sick at night (diarrhea). The next day I had even more diarrhea (5 times!!!), stomach crams and fever. I couldn't eat anything at all. Wednesday morning I felt better and went to school. Thursday midnight, I awoke to go to the toilet because of diarrhea. This time there was a lot. :( In the morning (6.15) I had fever so I didn't go to school. Then throughout the day I had sudden stomach crams. I went to see the doctor and got MC for Friday. These 2 days, I have no idea why, the teachers suddenly gave us lots and lots of homework. And a lot to catch up during weekends (luckily I managed to finish them all by midnight yesterday!!)

This week really was a week.

But I still managed to accomplish all my habits, and all of them are still at the highest streak. :D

However, the plans I set for the week was totally shattered. :(

I'm starting to plan again. I hope nothing goes wrong. ;)
GLB Status

It's going quite well for me. It's been a month since I've started...and as a small blog it's quite good. I have three blog followers (email updates), two subscribes to newsletter (no email updates), and one active commenter that I've emailed and had a conversation with. :D

Although I wish more people are reading...it's really good to know that at least I've helped some people. :D

Side-thought: I really have to ask for more guest post opportunities... :(
