21DJC Day 11 – Out of Your 5 Senses, Which is the Most Important to You, and Why?

This is Day 11 of the 21-Day Journaling Challenge (21DJC) for Nov 2011. View list of tasks: 21DJC Overview.

Hi everyone – Welcome to Day 11 of 21DJC! :)

Yesterday’s question was: “Who Do You Enjoy Spending Time With?“. (Read the responses.) A number of you immediately kicked off your answers by saying “Myself”, which I found somewhat alarming given the intent of the question wasn’t to ask you to “choose” between spending time with yourself or others. (Perhaps I could have made the question clearer when I wrote the post.)

While I recognize the merit of enjoying time with yourself (I definitely enjoy my alone time, and I think it’ll be alarming if one doesn’t enjoy being with oneself), the intent of yesterday’s question is to make you aware of who you enjoy spending time with, know why you enjoy spending time with them, and appreciate them for being in your life. That’s the first objective.

The second objective, which is more subtle, is to support you in making empowering friendships. By being aware of the traits that resonate with you, you can consciously gravitate toward the people who share those traits. This helps you to make friendships that support you, friendships that you bring the best out of you. (Related post: 7 Ways To Instantly Make Like-Minded Friends, bonus article in Personal Excellence Book, Volume 2.)

This is not an attack towards introverts, because I myself enjoy introvertism. Neither is it an avocation to be an extrovert. Extroverts are people who enjoy spending time with others over spending time by themselves, while introverts are people who prefer alone time over social time. Whether you are an introvert or extrovert though, you can enjoy time with yourself and time with others at the same time – it’s not a mutually exclusive relationship.

Yesterday’s question was about identifying who you enjoy spending time among people you already spend time with, not about asking you to choose between whether you enjoy spending time alone or whether you enjoy spending time with others.

There will always be certain people we like to hang around more, compared to other people in our life. For example, I believe some of you enjoy spending time with the other participants here, during challenges. Who are these people we like to spend time with? Why do we like to spend time with them? And how can we meet more of such people, so as to expand our consciousness to greater heights?

At the end of the day, such people help to bring the best out of ourselves. By consciously building these friendships, we create a powerful support network that supports us in our growth journey.

For me, I enjoy spending time with people who have high consciousness. People who focus on what matters in life, and not daily trivialities and gossip. People who have a keen willingness to learn and grow. People who are earnest in their communication, and do not speak behind other people’s backs. People who pursue their passions and make the best out of life. People who give space for others to grow and don’t impose their beliefs on others. People who believe in working hard and are willing to work hard, as opposed to people who skive and try to look for the easy way out.

This awareness help me realize why I feel drained when I hang out around lazy people who often complain, procrastinate, and gossip about others. It also helps me realize why I feel energized when I’m around certain people, because our energies rub off each other. Hence, I make sure to limit the time I spend with the former group, and spend more time with people in the latter group. Doing so helps me to maintain a positive, conscious state of mind.

With that said, let’s now move to today’s question!

21DJC Day 11

For most of us, we are blessed with 5 senses – Sight, Hearing, Taste, Smell and Touch. We have a 6th sense that is Intuition, but it’s not in the scope of today’s question. Today, I’d like you to think about this:

Out of Your 5 Senses, Which is the Most Important to You, and Why?

Out of the 5 Senses, Which is the Most Important to You, and Why?

Is it the sense of sight? The sense of hearing? The sense of taste? The sense of smell? Or the sense of touch? And why?

Put on your reflection cap and let your thoughts flow. Below is an empty form which you can use to write your answers to the question. Treat it as your private 21DJC journaling “room”, if you will. You will be seeing this form every day, for the 21 days of the challenge. There’s a button for you to keep track of your word count too, if you’re interested.

(Note you will not see the form below if you’re viewing this in your email client. Visit the actual post online to see the form.)

Out of Your 5 Senses, Which is the Most Important to You, and Why?

Your Task Today:

  1. Reflect and answer today’s question. There’s no word limit – whether minimum or maximum. Write as few or as many words as you want. It’s all up to what you want to express!
  2. Share your answer. After you are done writing, copy and paste your answer in the comments area and post it there.
  3. Check out other participants’ answers. Other participants will be sharing their answers too, so feel free to read and reply to their answers. This is a group course, so let’s support each other in these 21 days.
Look forward to reading your answers! :D

What a hard question. I can’t choose between sight and smell. The next important is touch, taste and smell. All senses are important to me too. How it is feel sense without touch? Like no hand? Must be easily injured.

Sight is #1 for me. I love and am soooo grateful for every sense, but if there were one to keep above all the rest, it would be the visual capacity. Seeing carries me forward into this world and beyond. Well, seeing as well as imagining carries me, and can I believe my eyes, by the way? Sometimes, however, appearances are deceiving, and it takes insight to get the whole picture. Insight comes into play on a whole different level, and depends on inner vision.
This is a very tough question to contemplate. I became much more aware of what each sense offers, and how gifted we are to have the different senses. It is tough to chose just one. I am in awe of the miracle of the human body, and how it is equipped to express itself and process information.

    Catching up with my journaling!

I would say the sense of sight. I pondered upon a similar question in the past and my answer has always been the same. When I think of it, my day is filled with the sensations I get from being able to see, read, watch and I don’t think I can bear a day without being able to do so.

To me, the sense of sight is probably the most important to me. Without sight, I would be living in complete darkness, without any idea of what this world looks like. By hearing sounds, I can only recognize the existence of a being, but I would not be able to imagine what that being looks like. It is for this reason that I realize that protecting my eyes is important.

My most important sense would have to be my hearing. I can’t imagine living without sound. I love music, voices, the sounds of nature, the sounds of the city and all the background noise that comes with it. I actually feel anxious when there is complete silence. I have to hear the whirl of my ceiling fan or the ticking of a clock in order to fall asleep and when I was in school, I always needed background noise in order to study. For me, silence is a distraction. When I consider the other four senses, the only other that comes a close second is my sight, but it is still second in comparison to my hearing.

I have thought of this question numerous times before. I don’t have an answer for it. It is so hard to choose just one when they are all so important to me in their own ways. If I had to choose though it would most likely be touch. I can’t put into words why but I know in my heart why.

My most important sense is hearing, especially because music is one of the most important things to me. After that comes sight, because some of the things I see are just breathtaking and they really move me. Then comes touch, because being numb physically would feel so detaching and I really enjoy the relaxation and comfort physical touch gives. Smell is probably next, because I love the scent of my husband. Taste feels the least important to me, cause even though I love food, it doesn’t really effect my whole being so much (just the food/energy intake, and I’d still be able to function okay otherwise).

    1. Hearing
    2. Sight
    3. Touch
    4. Smell
    5. Taste

    Touch… or sight.

Touch is about love, appreciation, connection.

Sight is about non-verbal communication. It says much more than words.

Hear is about music… and people talking… But if I hear someone speaking, and cannot see him, I cannot understand him fully. I need to see how he acts, smiles, where he looks, how he poses and how he frowns.

First thought: It was ever the sense of smell. Whenever I smell something wonderful, It´s more than magic. Flowers, the sea, the snow, a heavy summer rain.

Second thought: the sense of touch. It´s essential to me to touch my boyfriend. At his finger, his face, his knee. Whatever, touching him just for a second gives me strength.

The most important sense for me would be the sense of sight. I love to travel and I love to meet people, I love experiencing new things and there would be no better way to experience these things by seeing them. Seeing also makes me so greatful to all the blessings and beauty that God has made for us.

For me every sence is a magnificent gift from God, but if I have to choose one I think the sight would be the most important because I think I couldnt live without the great world we live in, the nature that soround us:
    - The great dark nights with millions of little lights…!
    - The sunrise every morning, with those huge mountains we have in Mexico city, this amazing 5 minutes are a great oportunity to start the day saing thaks to God.
    - The tress moving their branches like dancing its almost fun while great, all of them in the same rithm..
    - The sea, that never gets tired of making the awesome movements, even if you just see it and couldnt hear the sound, it so relaxing and makes you feel how small and vulnerable we are.
    - The fortest, with all kinds of trees, diferent shapes and colors, birds, squirils, flowers of diferent colors forms and sizes, the river…I love going to the forest in the mountain, I´ll never get tired of watching around.
    - Sunsets…. so romantic…!
    - The snow mountains… couldnt be better…
    - I love watching my girls doing what ever, sleeping like little babys (the 3 of them are allready adults..!), or working, cooking, laughing, etc. Looking at them it´s a pleasure to me.
    - And I also love to visit museums, to admire the pieces of art, I love to see the architecture of Mexico city, very old, as well as the moderns buildings, Mexico is a city that makes you to love just watching around.
I thank God for my eyes….!

This is one of the hardest questions I’ve ever had to answer. Without sight, I wouldn’t be able to see my boyfriend walking through the door after a hard day at work, I wouldn’t be able to see my puppy or my sister growing up, I wouldn’t be able to see my future children or grandchildren. I’d miss out on the smiles of the ones I love, and the beautiful scenery when I’m on vacation. Without hearing, I couldn’t hear my boyfriend whispering that he loves me, or any family member for that matter. Hearing their loving voices means the world to me. Without touch I wouldn’t be able to hold my dog when she’s looking at me with such cute eyes, or embrace my boyfriend or a family member over the holidays. Touch is also very important to me. I suppose my sight would be the most important to me, though it would be torture to see those dearest to me and not be able to hear or embrace them. At least I would be able to see them, and that is of the utmost importance to me. Not to mention it would also be extremely hard to get around and live an independent lifestyle without sight. I think it’s the sense we rely on the most, and it’s the one that I believe is most important to me.

Touch. I am a very tactile person. When I’m in a shop buying something, I have to get a feel for it before I buy it. I also love hugs :)

It’s definitely the sense of hearing!

I am very sensitive with noise and news! I get irritated and really frustrated when I am in a really noisy place. I just feel like losing myself when I am put in a really noisy situation.

Also, before anything, I generally get very emotional when I first hear something be it good/bad news, critics or complaints, etc.
