Perfect as an everyday reminder!

Today, I’ve for you the Bucket List Manifesto. It lists 101 sample things to do before you die, which you can hang on your wall as inspirational reminders. Spans 3 pages long:

I’ve deliberately kept the colors simple as most of you would probably want to print this one, so it helps to save ink.

You can also download the full bucket list article in the form of an ebook, in the Free Ebooks section. For newsletter subscribers (if you’re not subscribed yet, where have you been?! ), you should have received this as one of the 2 welcome ebooks when you first signed up.

And last but not least, as a special touch, I’ve included a blank bucket list template for you to write the things YOU want to do before you die.

Those taking Live a Better Life in 30 Days Challenge right now (Dec 2011 run) – You can print this out and use this in the bucket list task which will be coming on Day 27.

Quick note: I’ve been quoted in CNN, Business Insider and CBS Business Network in the past month for my articles! Check them out: How To Stand Up to Rude Co-Worker (CNN) | How To Handle Rejection like a Pro (Business Insider) | Being Rejection Proof (CBS Business Network) | Learning to Say No (Business Insider).

I’ve also recently contributed to an article for the August issue of Simply Her magazine (if I’m not wrong), so check it out when it hits the stores next month. The article is on maintaining one’s sanity in the workplace.

Ok, I’ve been keeping this under wraps for a while as I wanted to wait till everything is confirmed before I announce anything.

As of this coming Sunday (19 Jun), I’ll be traveling to Europe! Holland, Amsterdam to be specific. And I’ll be traveling around for 3 months, after which I may go over to UK for a few more months, as I’m eligible to stay in UK for 6 months without a visa. *Starts cheering and throwing party poppers*

It’s really exciting for me because this is the first time I’ve been to the Western part of the world. Some of you may recall from my Vision Board video that Europe is next on my travel list (it’s on my bucket list as well). And it’s now finally coming true!

The truth is, I’ve always wanted to experience life overseas for an extended period of time, ever since I was a student, to experience life in a different country and immerse in the local culture. When I was in university, I planned to go overseas for exchange, but didn’t get to do so as I skipped my honors year and graduated a year earlier than expected. NUS, or universities for that matter, don’t allow students to go on exchange in their last year, so this goal of mine never got to fruition.

Yet, it remained a lingering intention to be fulfilled one day.

Ever since I graduated from university, I’ve traveled around Asia Pacific, largely the Greater China and ASEAN region, thanks to my previous job. I feel like I’ve seen a good breadth of countries in Asia region, and have been eager to check out the Western part of the world.

This year, I decided to put this goal into action. After 2 years of working on my business, I feel I’m in the perfect place to do that. One, I have steady streams of passive income (from my ebook sales and advertising). Two, I’m not geographically bounded with my work – by deliberate design, too. Meaning, I don’t need to be at a particular location to perform my work. I can blog from anywhere in the world, just as I can do my 1-1 coaching anywhere, as long as I have my laptop and an internet connection.

I used to have ongoing speaking engagements and coaching work that required me to be in Singapore, but I’ve been ending those arrangements in the past few months as I didn’t want to be geographically bounded. I wanted to be able to do my work and pursue my personal goals at the same time.

So finally, it has come to the point where I’m ready to realize my personal goal to travel overseas. Originally my intention was to travel to New York sometime in June-July and stay there for a few months. I was even preparing to apply for a US visa earlier this year.

As fate would have it, I was recently invited to speak at a Learning Conference in Holland, Amsterdam by de Baak (a renowned training institute). The engagement is taking place on 21 June and all expenses will be graciously paid for by de Baak. (Thanks Wouter and Harry!)

Since I’m going to Holland now, I thought I might as well shift my travel plans there – to be frank, either place works perfectly for me, since I have never been to Europe nor America before. After the conference ends, I’ll be extending my stay in <del>Holland</del> Europe for 11 weeks, since that’s the maximum period I can stay in EU without a visa (it’s too late to apply for a visa now).

I’ve not checked if my return flight is changeable – if it is, I might shift it out by a few more months and make a visit to UK, where I’m eligible to stay for 6 months on a Singapore passport without a visa. Either way, I’ll definitely be in Europe for the next 3 months in baseline scenario.

So that’s it – hello to Europe, and bye to Singapore for now! I’m not sure if there are any readers in Europe – if you are, please come and say hello in the forums or on Facebook. Feel free to share any tips on staying in Europe – I’m all ears.

What am I planning to do in the 3 months there? It’ll mainly be to experience and immerse in the local culture in Europe. I’m not a backpacker style traveler and I’m not all that interested to comb through X countries in X days either – I don’t find any fun in rushing through a travel. I’m the sort who prefers to just stay put in a place and immerse in what it has to offer.

I’ll check out Holland in the first few weeks, after which I may take weekend trips to neighboring countries if I get bored while I’m there (namely France, Germany, and possibly Italy). But this is just a back-up plan right now. My main plan is just to hang out in Holland and enjoy the place.

Will I be blogging about the trip? It depends. If there are any personal growth lessons I pick up along the way, I’ll surely be writing about them. I don’t think I’ll be explicitly writing about the trip, though I certainly will share an experience or two, where relevant. After all, Personal Excellence is about sharing the lessons I learn in life through what I experience.

Right now I’m just really excited about what’s up. I haven’t packed my luggage nor done any major preparations yet, though I imagine it’s going to get really busy in the next week before I fly off.

Jun 14, ’11: All your responses have been overwhelming! Thank you so much for your well wishes!

Since the post went online 2 days ago, I’ve received numerous emails and recommendations from EU readers and past EU coaching clients. Because of that, my itinerary is also rapidly changing as well. After high recommendations on Germany from all of you, I’m planning for a multi-stop trip – first in Holland for a month, then Germany (possibly a month), and next either to another country or back to Amsterdam, depending on how the trip goes.

Jul 1 ’11: Check out the 7-part Holland Travel Series. It shares my tips on how to travel to Holland, the dutch culture, dutch lifestyle, dutch environment and essential things to know about the country. I’ll be going to Germany next. Join my Facebook Page for daily updates and pictures on my trip!

Nov 7 ’11: I’ve finished my Europe travels, and I ended up staying in Holland, Germany, France/Paris, Spain and London in the past 4.5 months. Even had 2 London meet-ups with PE readers while I was there! (Meet-up #1, Meet-up #2). It’s been a great ride, and I really enjoyed my stay there. I’ve made many wonderful connections during my time there and I’m sure this isn’t the last time I’ll be here. For now, I’m off to US – will see what adventures await there.

Jan 25 ’12: I’m finally back in Singapore after my almost 3-month long travels in US – covering east coast (Philadelphia, Washington DC, New York City, Boston) and west coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco). I also did a speaking engagement with Wharton Business School while I was there. It has been a great 7-month long travel – for now I foresee myself staying put in SG for a while. Here’s to a tropical climate, consistently (warm) weather and nice, predictable routines.

I was interviewed to share my take on bucket lists, what it means to me and how it relates to living in excellence.

If you are new here, hello and welcome! Most of you are probably new here. This blog is where I share my personal journey on living life to the fullest. To date there’s over 140 articles, so it can get a little overwhelming. The Welcome page will guide you through the top reader favorites. Feel free to add me on Facebook and Twitter – I’d love to connect with you. Be sure to subscribe to the RSS feed for the latest personal excellence articles.

Here’s the section I was quoted:

Celestine Chua, who has never seen the TV series, came across the bucket list concept while surfing the Internet in 2009.

The 25-year-old from Singapore eventually decided to write her own bucket list, which she shares with the public on her Web site as a reminder to “live every moment to the fullest when you’re in good health.”

Despite already opening her own school for personal development in Singapore and starting an online talk show, Chua said she thinks No. 14, “experience true love,” will be the most challenging goal to accomplish.

“You might think [a bucket list is] just a list of goals, but if you’re really thinking about things you want to see, experience and feel before you die, then the whole concept of setting goals is totally different,” Chua said. “When we start thinking about what we want to do before we die, our goals become totally different. Fall in love, see the Empire State building. That’s the magic of the bucket list — it removes limits.”

They linked to my bucket list in the article, so we are getting a whole stream of visitors from CNN.com now. As I’m writing now, my web server is starting to jam up from the huge influx of traffic.

I know, I mentioned experiencing true love will be the most challenging goal to accomplish. I’m sure many people out there feel the same way too. But hey, I believe as long as we persist in this journey, we will get there

There were other interesting things I discussed with Stephanie (the journalist) during the interview but didn’t make it in the story. For example:

Everyone’s bucket list will be different, because our bucket list is supposed to reflect the things that mean most to us in living our best life. For example, my list has quirky stuff like riding a camel, dressing up in a costume party (I love masquerading!), swimming with dolphines etc due to the spontaneous, fun-loving side of me, and then there’s the items that reflect the romantic idealist in me such as flying in a hot air balloon, stargazing, and experiencing true love. Thus, the goal isn’t to get a bucket list that’s the same as mine or his or hers, but to create a bucket list that’s true for you yourself.

Bucket lists act as a medium to help us live our best life. Hence, it’s important that we don’t get hung up over trying to accomplish our bucket list items that we miss living itself. It’s about the journey of living life to the fullest, every second, every moment.

Your bucket list is never ending. Just as you finish the items, you’ll add new ones as they come along. There is absolutely no reason why our bucket list should ever be empty. There is such an incredible wealth of things, events, activities, experiences to witness/go through in life that it’s impossible that we will ever be done with living. This is why my bucket list is never going to be empty. I’m continuously completing and adding on new items that will help me live my life to the fullest.

By the way , #46 of my list is to be featured in international media, which will include CNN. So this interview helped me achieve one of my list items. I feel very blessed. Thanks so much guys for all your ongoing support

“Every man dies – Not every man really lives.” ~ William Ross

“The only people who fear death are those with regrets.” ~ Author Unknown

A few days ago, I was surfing online when I came across someone’s bucket list. It quickly inspired me to create my own bucket list as well and write an article at the same time.

What’s a Bucket List?

If you haven’t heard about the bucket list, it is a list of all the goals you want to achieve, dreams you want to fulfill and life-experiences you desire to experience before you die.

Why Create a Bucket List?

Why have a bucket list? If you don’t live your days by personal goals and plans, chances are you spend most of your time caught up in a flurry of day-to-day activities. Ever feel your days are passing by without any tangible output to speak of? What were your accomplishments in the past 3 months? What are your upcoming goals for the next 3 months? Look at the things you did and the things you’re planning to do next – Do they mean anything to you if you are to die today? Having a bucket list reminds you of what’s really important so you can act on them.

Even if you frequently live by goals or to-do lists, they are probably framed within a certain social context e.g., performance, career, health. A bucket list opens up the context. It’s a forum to set anything and everything you’ve ever wanted to do, whether it’s big, small or random.

It’s just like planning ahead all the highlights you want for YOUR whole life. Even though goal setting is already my staple activity, I still found many new things to do while I was writing on my bucket list. It was an incredibly insightful exercise. What’s more, coming up with the list it gave me a whole new layer of enthusiasm knowing what’s in store ahead!

The objective of creating a bucket list isn’t to instill some kind of a race against time or to create aversion towards death. I don’t see our existence to be limited to just our physical years on earth – I don’t see our existence to be limited to just our physical years on earth – our physical lifespan is but a short speck of our existence in the universe. The whole point of a bucket list is to maximize every moment of our existence and live our life to the fullest. It’s a reminder of all the things we want to achieve in our time here, so that instead of pandering our time in pointless activities, we are directing it fully toward what matters to us.

Create Your Bucket List

If you don’t have a bucket list, I highly recommend you to create one. How much does it cost? Probably 30 minutes to an hour, or more if you get really caught up in the writing :). What do you gain? Significant clarity and focus on what you want from your life. It’s an invaluable exchange.

If you have already written your bucket list before, take this opportunity to review it. See if there are new items you want to add-on. If so, add them in. Check if all the items listed are still relevant. If not, remove them.

If you are curious, you can check out my bucket list before you start off

Now, take out your pen and paper or open up a text editing document. You can check out the following sites where people publicly share their bucket lists: 43 Things and Barefoot List.

Start writing down what comes to mind as you read these questions:

What if you were to die tomorrow? What would you wish you could do before you die?

What have you always wanted to do but have not done yet?

What will you do if you have unlimited time, money and resources?

Any countries, places or locations you want to visit?

What are your biggest goals and dreams?

What do you want to see in person?

What achievements do you want to have?

What experiences do you want to have / feel?

Are there any special moments you want to witness?

What activities or skills do you want to learn or try out?

What are the most important things you can ever do?

What would you like to say/do together with other people? People you love? Family? Friends?

Are there any specific people you want to meet in person?

What do you want to achieve in the different areas: Social, Love, Family, Career, Finance, Health (Your weight, Fitness level), Spiritual?

What do you need to do to lead a life of the greatest meaning?

Come up with as many items as you can. The items should be things you have not done yet. Don’t stop until you finish listing at least 101 things! If you find yourself stuck, chances are you are mentally limiting/constraining yourself. Release those shackles – This is a list of everything you want to achieve, do, see, feel and experience in your life. Check out the next section for added inspiration.

101 Things to Consider for Your Bucket List

Get Into Action!

After you finish your bucket list, here’s what to do next:

Start acting on them! Plan out the successful path towards these goals – For this, read my 7-part Successful Goal Achievement series.

Be reminded of the list all the time. Use environmental reinforcement – put them up in a prominent spot where you will see them every day / very regularly. Put it in your life handbook, set it as your wallpaper, pin it on your noticeboard, print it out, stick it on your wardrobe/locker.

Share them with your family and friends. Inspire them to create their own bucket list too! This way, you also create accountability to your own bucket list.

Don’t limit your bucket list items to a certain definition. Sometimes opportunity present itself in a totally different manner. Keep your eyes peeled! The universe will start throwing things your way.

Review regularly. Cross out the list of things after you do them. See if some of the items have become irrelevant and if there are new things you want to add. Just as you finish the items, you’ll add new ones as they come along. There is absolutely no reason why our bucket list should ever be empty. There is such an incredible wealth of things, events, activities, experiences to witness/go through in life that it’s impossible that we will ever be done with living. Likewise for me, I’m continuously completing and adding on new items that will help me live my life to the fullest, so my bucket list always has new items to accomplish.
